Visit

Step into a hidden oasis in Victoria where the natural landscape blends to complement a rich winemaking heritage. An easy day trip from Melbourne (90 minutes), Shepparton (40 minutes), Bendigo (60 minutes) - the list goes on! Established in 1860 and purchased by the Purbrick family in 1925, Tahbilk captures the hearts and minds of visitors to Nagambie as a beautiful and historic family owned winery whose timeless appearance opens the imagination.

If you are driving don't forget we're not the only great winery in the area. There is also Mitchelton and our Strathbogie ranges friends, Fowles plus we're also a stone's throw away from Heathcote or Rutherglen. Sounds like a weekend road trip to me!

About

Established in 1860 Tahbilk is one of Australia's most beautiful and historic family owned wineries. Located in the Nagambie Lakes region of central Victoria (120kms north of Melbourne), one of the nation's premium viticultural areas. The property comprises some 1,214 hectares of rich river flats with a frontage of 11 kms to the Goulburn River and 8 kms of permanent backwaters and creeks. Purchased by the Purbrick family in 1925, Tahbilk is home to 5 generations.

The name Tahbilk originates from our location, which the local aboriginal people first referred to as "tabilk-tabilk", meaning "place of many waterholes". Originally spelled Tabilk, the 'h' was added later.

Tahbilk is home to some 200 hectares of vineyards specialising in grape varietals from the Rhone including whites varietals: Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne and red varietals Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre. Also growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdelho grapes.

Tahbilk has a long history of producing fine wines with the help of rich ferric-oxide/sandy loam soils and temperate climate. With over 150 years of winemaking experience you are sure to find some absolute gems in the Tahbilk repertoire. Whether it be ‘1860 Vines’, ‘Eric Stevens Purbrick’ or the (far from) standard Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, there is a history and character with both varietals that goes back generations.

A beautiful place

An introduction to the beautiful place we call home. Tahbilk.

For us, the story of Tahbilk Winery begins with the land and the river. This place is known as tabilk-tabilk, ‘place of many waterholes’ in the language of the Taungurung people, the first people; a name which perfectly describes the landscape.

Established in 1860 we believe Tahbilk is the most beautiful and historic family owned winery in Australia, located in one of the nation's premium viticultural areas. The property itself comprises some 1,214 hectares of rich river flats with a frontage of 11 kms to the Goulburn River and 8 kms of permanent backwaters and creeks.

In 2013 Tahbilk became carbon neutral. An extension of the work already completed, by my family, to restore the delicate balance once known by the Daung-wurrung clans.

Our promise to our customers is the creation of prestigious wines and experiences worth sharing which celebrate our history and commitment to a sustainable legacy for future generations.

1860s Vines Shiraz

Amongst some of the oldest Shiraz plantings in the world is the 1860 Vines Shiraz. Surviving the phylloxera plague that decimated many vineyards, we continue to produce limited quantities of wine from a ½ hectare of original un-grafted, pre-phylloxera Estate vines. The 1860 Vines Shiraz has incredibly strong regional provenance and is made for long term cellaring. These wines are the pride of the Purbrick family and are amongst some of the rarest in the world.

It is amazing how this unfurls in the glass. As if those old vines have a point to make – not so much ‘look at me’ rather, ‘I am all about grace’. Everything us just so. The red and blue fruits, the dash of spices and the cedary oak that’s tucked in as well. It’s medium-bodied yet there’s length once the supple tannins finish gliding across the palate – Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion 2021.

1927 Vines Marsanne

This limited release single vineyard wine, crafted from vine cuttings planted in 1927, was first released from the 1998 vintage. The fruit is harvested early at high natural acidity levels with no additions, the juice becomes fully oxidised. The clean juice is fermented at low temperatures with the resultant wine ‘water’ clear, flavourless and with high acidity. The wine is then bottled and that’s where the magic happens.

‘Once bottled, all the magic happens over time as it evolves into a wonderful textural, mineral wine. It’s a classic ugly duckling to beautiful swan story. By making the wine this way it develops in the bottle slowly and has long term cellaring potential.’ - Alister Purbrick
